What are cracked teeth?

A cracked tooth is a result of enamel damage. Enamel is the visible, outer covering of your teeth. Cracks usually occur due to oral trauma, but they can also occur as a result of poor oral hygiene or bad habits

What causes cracked teeth?

Common causes of cracked teeth include:

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Large dental fillings that weaken the integrity of the enamel
  • Chewing or biting hard foods
  • Getting hit in the mouth
  • Abrupt changes in temperature

You’re also more likely to experience cracked teeth as you get older. Over the years, your enamel weakens and wears down, especially after the age of 50.

What are the symptoms of cracked teeth?

Symptoms of cracked teeth include:

  • Pain while chewing or biting
  • Sensitivity to cold, heat, or sweetness
  • Pain that comes and goes
  • Swelling of the gums

If your tooth becomes infected, you might also experience increased tooth sensitivity or a sensation of heat in your gums.

How are cracked teeth diagnosed?

To diagnose cracked teeth, your NYCEndodontics provider reviews your dental health history and asks about your symptoms, including their severity and when they first started.

Next, your provider conducts an oral exam. If the crack is small or difficult to see, they might use an oral microscope or order 3D imaging. If necessary, your provider might also gently probe your gums to find areas of swelling or sensitivity.

How are cracked teeth treated?

Treatment of cracked teeth depends on the size, location, and severity of the enamel damage. Small cracks are easy to repair with dental bonding. Larger cracks might require fillings or a dental crown. If a cracked tooth becomes infected, your provider might recommend root canal therapy to reduce the risk of additional complications.

Is there any way to prevent cracked teeth?

If you want to prevent a cracked tooth, the team at NYCEndodontics recommends practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, floss before going to bed, and visit your general dentist at least twice a year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

If you grind your teeth or play contact sports, consider a night guard or a mouthguard.
