Root Canal Therapy

If you develop a deep cavity or experience a blow to the mouth, root canal therapy can preserve your natural tooth and prevent the need for an extraction. At NYCEndodontics in the Lenox Hill area of Manhattan, the team of endodontic specialists performs root canal therapy on a routine basis. To make an appointment at the practice in New York City, call the office today or book online.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is an endodontic procedure that treats infected or inflamed tooth pulp. Tooth pulp is a substance that nourishes your teeth and provides temperature sensations, but it isn’t necessary for their long-term survival.

By removing damaged or infected tooth pulp, the team at NYCEndodontics can preserve your natural tooth and prevent the need for an extraction.

Why would I need root canal therapy?

The team at NYCEndodontics uses root canal therapy to treat infected or inflamed tooth pulp. These issues can occur due to:

  • Deep decay
  • Undergoing extensive dental work
  • Experiencing a blow to the mouth
  • Chipping or cracking a tooth

If you experience symptoms like swollen gums or increased tooth sensitivity, make an appointment at NYCEndodontics right away.

What does root canal therapy involve?

At NYCEndodontics, root canal therapy takes two separate appointments.

First visit

Your provider conducts an oral exam and takes a series of X-rays to assess your tooth. Next, they administer a local anesthetic and remove the damaged or infected pulp from the center of your tooth.

Your NYCEndodontics provider then fills your tooth with gutta-percha and takes digital impressions. Then, they bond a temporary crown to the top of your tooth.

Lastly, your provider sends the impressions to a dental lab that designs and manufactures a custom dental crown.

Second visit

About a week later, you return to NYCEndodontics. Your provider administers a local anesthetic, carefully removes the temporary crown, and replaces it with the permanent one. Then, they provide care instructions.

What is recovery like after root canal therapy?

After root canal therapy, you might experience increased tooth sensitivity or mild discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. The team at NYCEndodontics recommends:

  • Brushing and flossing gently
  • Using a desensitizing toothpaste
  • Eating only soft foods for two or three days
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medication

Most people are able to return to work after a day, but if your symptoms persist or interfere with your daily routine, contact your provider immediately.
